Ray: Supergirl finally returns to Earth and leaves her new allies in space behind in Supergirl #34, but it’s also the last act for Marc Andreyko’s run – in December this title won’t be as closely connected to the Bendis line, as former co-writer Jody Houser takes over and handles the Supergirl Who Laughs storyline (and hopefully beyond).

But first it’s time for another tie-in, as Kara returns from dealing with Rogol Zaar to jump right into the Leviathan plot that has led to her foster parents the Danvers going missing along with everyone else from the DEO. Andreyko does a good job of syncing Kara’s absence up with the status quo she left before, including a cameo from her best friend Ben Rubel and the presence of missing posters for Kara Danvers. She immediately seeks out Dr. Shay Veritas, making her return for the second time this month, to help her zero in on her parents via the robotic hand Eliza Danvers had. But she tracks the hand effectively – and finds her mother not alive, but in a ME’s office.

I’m skeptical that Eliza is actually dead – it feels a little too easy as a resolution, and too quick – but the many graphic shots of a burned and destroyed body feel out of place in a comic starring Supergirl. It certainly gets Kara in the mood for a fight, though, and she gets it when some Kryptonite-armed Leviathan goons show up.

The surprise appearance at the end of the issue didn’t surprise me, but I’ll be glad to see that character explored more. I didn’t think the requisite Year of the Villain tie-in really worked for this comic, though – we kept cutting away from the main story and Kara’s emotions to catch up on a Brainiac robot who gets offered universal knowledge from Luthor and winds up evolving into a second Brainiac – despite Luthor working with the genuine article. I don’t really see how this one works with Luthor’s plan, so it wound up feeling like a distraction from Kara’s story, especially with only two issues after this one to wrap up the run.
